Khope Beads has been developed by two UK paper bead crazy makers Carol Lincoln and Susie Shales together with a cooperative of like minded lady bead makers who live in Nairobi, Kenya. Our simple aim is to enable economic empowerment through a system of fair trade for single mothers and women who would normally have great difficulty in finding work within their communities and who are living under highly challenging living conditions where water, sanitation, healthcare, light and heat are invariably not a given.
This wonderful collaboration couldn’t have happened without support from the Wales based charity Schoolchildren for Children in conjunction with The Nairobi based Carlile College and Centre for Urban Mission who as organisations work together to develop education facilities for children in Kibera, Kawangware and Korogocho, some of the most disadvantaged areas in Kenya and indeed in Africa and have worked tirelessly to assist this exciting project come to fruition.
